Garo Hills leader Zenith M. Sangma leaves TMC, rejoins Congress

Zenith Sangma, who served as the vice-president of TMC Meghalaya, has officially tendered his resignation to the party’s state president, Charles Pyngrope on Tuesday, stating that his decision came after much introspection.
MPCC president Vincent H. Pala announced that Sangma has rejoined Congress.
The MPCC hailed Sangma’s homecoming as symbolic of a wider political reawakening, noting that several leaders disillusioned by “opportunism and corruption” in other parties are returning to the Congress fold.
The party said this resurgence is being driven by “faith in democratic values, constitutional integrity, and people-centric governance.”
Zenith was among the 12 legislators who followed his brother, Mukul Sangma, in defecting from the Congress to the TMC in 2021. The TMC only won five seats in the 2023 Assembly elections. Zenith himself lost his seat.
The Congress, which won five seats in that election, has been reduced to nil. The exit of Saleng Sangma, who became an MP, and the defection of the remaining MLAs to the National People’s Party (NPP) has left the state assembly without any Congress representation.
