Gandhiji's manuscript not to be auctioned
The manuscript of a letter Mahatma Gandhi wrote 19 days before his assassination in 1948 will not not be auctioned here on Tuesday, Indian High Commission sources said.
They said they were in discussions with auctioneers Christie's in getting the manuscript on behalf of the government.
"We are currently in discussions with the aution house on the modalities of acquiring the letter on behalf of the government of India," the sources said.
Gandhiji's manuscript written for his journal "Harijan" was among the letters of famous personalities that were to go under the hammer tomorrow. Christie's had even fixed a reserve price of 9,000 to 12,000 pounds for the priceless document.
Several Gandhians had urged the government to initiate efforts to prevent auction of the letter and get it back to the country. The government had also considered entering the bid.
