Gandhian Engineering could be great gift from India: Mashelkar
If Mahatma Gandhi was India's greatest gift to the world in 20th century, Gandhian Engineering (GE), could be a great gift to mankind in 21st century, noted scientist R A Mashelkar said today.
Gandhian Engineering (GE), speaks about ultra low cost products through innovations to happen for a more equitable and sustainable society, especially when global warming is a concern, he said.
"GE is all about getting more (performance) from less (resources) for more (people) and not just for more profit," Mashelkar said while delivering the 11th Professor Ramlal Parikh Memorial Lecture here.
According to him, GE is based on Gandhi's tenets: "I would prize every innovation of science made for the benefit of all," and "Earth provides enough to satisfy every man's need but not every man's greed."
Advocating the mantra of getting 'More from Less for More' (MLM) with a view to create a more equitable society and sustainable future for the mankind, Mashelkar said, " MLM products and services are emerging as perhaps the biggest business opportunity of the coming decade."
Quoting a report of Asian Development Bank, Mashelkar said, "The fastest growing consumer class in the emerging markets of Asia consists of people spending USD 2-4, a day."
