Finally, Nivedita Chakraborty , a techie, and her friend Archana Sharad, who were passing by , managed to save the girl from her father. Nivedita later updated her Facebook account about the incident with pictures of the young woman getting thrashed. “He was grabbing the girl by her hair, slapping her, kicking her in the groin as she fell down on the road.Archana started pushing the man while I tried untangling the girl's hair from his fingers. Once freed, we along with the girl sought refuge inside our car. The man sat down on the car bonnet, refusing to let us drive,“ Nivedita's Facebook account said.
While the girl was being assaulted, her mother, a school teacher in Madurai, silently witnessed the scene in full approval. She felt her daughter had “brought shame to the family,“ according to Nivedita's Facebook account.
The Halasuru police entered the scene after passersby called the police control room, and took the man, his wife and daughter to the police station. “We brought all the three to the station. But since the daughter refused to file a complaint, we had to let him go,“ the police told ET.
The Karnataka State Human Rights Commissioner, however, has decided to register a suo moto case against Rajaram, said Meera Saxena, acting chairperson. “Parents have no business interfering even if their daughter is having an affair. She is a major, and they cannot compel her to marry a man whom they think is “suitable“ for her,“ she said.
