HYDERABAD: Andhra Pradesh will henceforth celebrate its Formation Day on June 2, in the aftermath of the state's bifurcation.

The decision to celebrate June 2 as the state Formation Day was taken at a meeting of the Council of Ministers chaired by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu here today.

There had been some confusion in the last few days on whether or not November 1 will continued to be celebrated as the state Formation Day in the wake of the bifurcation.

It was way back on November 1, 1956 the (original) state of Andhra Pradesh came into being with the amalgamation of then existing states of Andhra and Hyderabad.

On June 2, 2014 Andhra Pradesh formally split into two with the creation of Telangana state.

The new government of (truncated) AP took oath of office on June 8 and there was speculation that it would be considered as the state Formation Day.

"We thought it not proper to fix June 8 as the Formation Day as the new state formally came into being on June 2 itself. Hence June 2 will be our Formation Day," a senior minister said after the Cabinet meeting.
