Devendra Fadnavis’s rise in Indian politics is a story of persistence and discipline, backed by his sharp political instincts. Despite being born into a politically active family—his father Gangadharrao Fadnavis was a BJP MLC—Devendra had to carve his own path through grassroots activism, starting from shakhas and student movements. His early understanding of political messaging set him apart, with a notable instance being his decision to leave Indira Convent School during the Emergency imposed by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, moving instead to Saraswati Vidyalaya to complete his education.

A disciplined student and natural leader

Fadnavis’s former classmates recall him as disciplined and approachable. Nikhil Mundle, a childhood friend, described him as someone who “never broke rules” and had a unique ability to connect with different people. Ravleen Khurana, an entrepreneur, shared a memory from college debate competitions, saying, “Though Fadnavis was an opponent, I asked him for some points for my speech, and he suggested a few. I won the debate by leading with those points.”

Fadnavis pursued a law degree but chose activism over legal practice, dedicating himself to the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), where he built networks across Sangh organizations.

Early political career and lessons in governance

At 22, Fadnavis entered the Nagpur Municipal Corporation as a corporator, learning firsthand how to address public concerns and manage bureaucratic challenges. His leadership skills were evident when, at 27, he became the youngest mayor of Nagpur in 1997.

In 1999, Fadnavis transitioned to state politics, winning his first assembly election. As an MLA, he gained recognition for his meticulous research and fact-based debates. Known for dissecting state budgets and highlighting government shortcomings, his speeches often emphasized data over rhetoric.

Around that time, a photographer friend suggested he try modeling. Vivek Ranade, a friend, recalled, "He was initially camera-shy but persistent. Over 100 photos were taken with 6-7 different outfits. Eight hoardings were displayed in Nagpur." According to his friends, former Prime Minister Vajpayee once called him the "model MLA."

A "model MLA" with an eye for detail

Fadnavis’s political acumen caught the attention of senior BJP leaders like Gopinath Munde. During this period, a photographer friend persuaded him to pose for a modeling project, leading to his nickname, the “model MLA.” His ability to analyze vast amounts of data and deliver impactful speeches remains a hallmark of his political career.
