With dissident Trinamool MPs announcing their decision to join the Tripura-based Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI), the spotlight has suddenly shifted to the almost non-existent party with its founder & national organising secretary, Shantanu Dey welcoming the merger.

The NCPI, a registered unrecognised political party (RUPP) which was registered in 2023 in Howrah's Sankrail, in Hatgachha village under Banipur Post Office, according to the ECI website, finds itself in of the corridors of power after ex-Trinamool MPS announced their merger with the party.

Shantanu Dey said, "I welcome them to hold talks with me. Why won't I be happy if my party grows? I have heard that the decision was taken by the party president. He has not called me about this yet. We will be able to work for India, Assam, and other states and Bengal."

He said that he got to know about this from social media and the news.

This puts at rest the confusion regarding the merger with a confused NCPI leadership stating earlier that: "The NCPI party leadership is holding a meeting with its own party functionaries to discuss the matter. We were clueless about the merger."

NCPI officials in Kolkata told ET they had no idea or information about the merger or regarding receiving the 20 rebel Trinamool MPs into the NCPI, which made the original Trinamool Congress party almost non-existent.
