Former Chief Minister of Maharashtra and Lok Sabha Speaker Manohar Joshi passed away on Friday at the age of 86. He was hospitalised in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of P D Hinduja Hospital in Mumbai after suffering a cardiac arrest.

Who was Manohar Joshi?
Joshi was a prominent leader of the Shiv Sena party and held various positions throughout his career. He served as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra from 1995 to 1999, leading the state's first non-Congress government in coalition with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).


Before becoming Chief Minister, he held positions like Mayor of Mumbai and Member of the Legislative Assembly. He later served as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha from 2002 to 2004 and was a Member of the Rajya Sabha from 2006 to 2012.

What PM Modi said about Manohar Joshi?
Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the demise of Manohar Joshi, the former Lok Sabha Speaker and the former Chief Minister of Maharashtra.

The Prime Minister said that he was 'pained' by the passing away of the veteran leader adding that the latter made noteworthy contributions as a Union Minister.

"Pained by the passing away of Manohar Joshi. He was a veteran leader who spent years in public service and held various responsibilities at the municipal, state and national levels. As Maharashtra CM, he worked tirelessly for the state's progress. He also made noteworthy contributions as a Union Minister," PM Modi said in a post on X.

The Prime Minister further said that Joshi will be remembered for his diligence as a legislator.

"During his tenure as the Lok Sabha Speaker, he strove to make our Parliamentary processes more vibrant and participative. Manohar Joshi Ji will also be remembered for his diligence as a legislator, having had the honour of serving in all four legislatures. Condolences to his family and supporters," the post mentioned.
