From ABVP to BJP war room: Dharmendra Pradhan, the party man beyond ministry

New Delhi: Dharmendra Pradhan's resignation from the Union Cabinet may have ended his latest stint in government, but not necessarily his political relevance within the BJP.

While his tenure as education minister ended amid mounting pressure over examination-related controversies, party leaders continue to view him as one of BJP's most trusted organisational leaders and election strategists.

More an organisation man than a career minister, Pradhan began his political journey in ABVP, during which he was injured in police action while protesting a paper leak in Odisha. He entered the Lok Sabha from Deogarh in 2004, when BJP was still a minor force in the state.


The son of former Union minister Debendra Pradhan, he emerged as one of BJP's principal faces in Odisha as the party expanded its footprint. An OBC leader from the Chasa community, he has frequently figured among the names discussed for the BJP president's post.

Within the organisation, Pradhan was entrusted with some of the party's most politically sensitive assignments, including Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. During turbulent phases in BJP-JDU ties, he remained one of the party's principal channels of communication with Bihar CM Nitish Kumar.

His reputation as an election strategist grew after he steered the BJP to victory in Haryana despite anti-incumbency following the party's setback in 2024 elections. He was later assigned Bihar, where BJP emerged as the single-largest party and NDA retained power. Earlier, he played a key role in BJP's 2021 West Bengal campaign, including the Nandigram contest in which Suvendu Adhikari defeated Mamata Banerjee, and was again among the party's key strategists in the 2026 assembly elections. He also played a central role in BJP's campaign that ended the BJD's 24-year rule in Odisha in 2024.

In government, however, his ministerial journey was more mixed. After heading the petroleum ministry for over seven years, his tenure in the education ministry came to be overshadowed by examination-related controversies, sustained Opposition attacks and questions over the functioning of the NTA, eventually leading to his resignation.

Within BJP, however, Pradhan's organisational record continues to outweigh his ministerial setback, ensuring that his resignation is viewed as the loss of a ministerial post rather than a diminution of his political relevance.
