One was killed on and four others were injured when security forces opened fire in Srinagar even as authorities eased curfew.

SRINAGAR/JAMMU: In fresh violence, one person was on Thursday killed and four others were injured when security forces opened fire to quell protesters attempting to storm a police station in Srinagar even as authorities eased curfew for longer periods in six districts in the Valley.

In Kishtwar in Jammu region, army staged flag marches as security forces maintained a strict vigil in the curfew-bound town where two persons were killed and several others injured in communal clashes, police firing and a grenade blast on Tuesday.

Curfew was relaxed in Srinagar, Ganderbal, Budgam, Kulgam, Anantnag and Kupwara districts in the Valley for longer periods as the situation eased, official sources said. People bought essential items including medicines during the relaxation period. Curfew was also relaxed in Bandipora district for a few hours.

In Srinagar, the security forces opened fire when stone-pelting protesters attacked a police station in Safakadal area, the sources said. They were protesting against alleged high-handedness of the security forces while dealing with stir over the Amarnath issue.

A police vehicle was also set on fire by an agitating crowd at Rawalpora in the outskirts of the city, they said.

A CRPF spokesman denied the charges that the force was crossing the limits of policing.
