Fresh violence in Singur
Singur turned violent again on Tuesday when members of the Trinamool Congress' Save Farmland Committee (SFC) tried to damage a portion of the boundary wall at the site of the Tata Motors project site at Bosepukur.
The police had to lathicharge and burst tear gas shells to disperse the mob that was clearly taking advantage of the absence of adequate armed police in Bosepukur, Singur. Members of the SFC had tried to demolish the boundary walls of the Tata Motors small car project site. However, no arrests were made in this connection.
Lately, in order to step up policing in Nandigram, the state government had sent about 300 armed policemen to Nandigram from Singur. This was especially after the Calcutta high Court directed the West Bengal government to restore normalcy in Nandigram.
Sources in the Hooghly district police said: "A few days ago, 300 local armed policemen, who were posted in Singur to guard the boundary walls of the Tata Motors project site, had been rushed off to Nandigram to tackle the situation there. Even since we sent the police personnel from our district to Nandigram, no back-up arrangements were made at Singur to fill the void to balance the security arrangements. Which is perhaps why we are facing problems in guarding the boundary walls of the Tata Motors car project. However, we have urged state police authorities to deploy more armed police personnel in Singur," a senior district police official said on Tuesday.
It is learnt that additional police forces from the districts of Howrah and West Midnapore will be now posted in Nandigram as the government has decided to open a few more police posts in different troubled pockets there.
