Fresh trouble at Assam-Nagaland border: Militants kill 1, injure 3 others in Sarupathar area
GUWAHATI: Suspected militants killed one person and injured three others in Assam’s Sarupathar area on Thursday, shattering a three-month lull in trouble along the Assam-Nagaland border.

Tension is running high in the area,” superintendent of police for Golaghat, PP Singh, told ET. “These people had gone to reap paddy. We are monitoring the situation.”

The attack has fueled protests in the Golaghat area. Ethnic clashes in the border villages of Assam and Nagaland in August had claimed 11 lives and displaced nearly 10,000 people.

Last month, Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Rajnath Singh and requested them to impress upon the Nagaland government to enable a congenial and conducive environment along the border.

Singh had urged the chief ministers of the two states to maintain people-to-people contact along the inter-state border to strengthen peace and harmony. Assam and Nagaland share a 512.1-km-long border.
