KOLKATA: A delegation of Senators of the French Upper House today was apprised of the controversies about acquisition of land for the Tata Motors Nano car project at Singur by West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee.

''Singur is a burning issue. We wanted to know about what happened there and resistance put up by farmers for their land. We were apprised of the situation," leader of the French nine-member delegation Senator Pierre Fauchon said here after meeting Bhattacharjee.

The delegates observed that such things happened in many places where socioeconomic changes were effected.

The delegation also discussed about the success of the micro-credit system and initiatives by the women Self-Help Groups in the state.

It stressed on exchange programmes in education between the two countries to strengthen bilateral relations, Fauchon said.

Fauchon, besides acting as Chairman of the Indo-French Friendship Group of the Senate, is also working as a member of the Committee for Constitutional Laws, Legislation, Universal Suffrage, Regulation and General Administration.
