Forward Bloc joins anti-POSCO agitation

BHUBANESWAR: The Forward Bloc on Monday extended its support to ongoing anti-POSCO agitation in Orissa with its national general secretary and MP Debabrata Biswas joining a protest-rally outside Fortune Tower, the venue of POSCO-India's headquarter.

The protest-rally was organized here by the Jagatsinghpur Zilla Bikash Parishad coinciding with the steel major's crucial meeting in Seoul today, agitation leader Abhiram Nayak said.

''We want our voice to reach Seoul so that the company authorities there can gauge the sentiments of local people", he said.

Criticising the central government and Orissa government's move to hand over Khandadhar iron ore mines to the South Korean steel major which proposed to set up a 12 MTPA greenfield steel mill near Paradip, Biswas said it would lead to a massive agitation across the country. ''Encouraging POSCO means selling off the country's sovereignty,'' he said.

Biswas said his party would oppose the South Korean company tooth and nail as it intended to grab the country's natural resources at throwaway price.

The protest-rally was supported by at least 10 mass organizations and political parties.

CPI leader Nityananda Pradhan, who too marched towards the Fortune Tower, said his party had been opposing the project since day one.

More than 50 activists, including women, courted arrest while trying to break police cordon near the spot.
