GUWAHATI: Congress heavyweight and former Meghalaya Chief Minister, DD Lapang has decided not to contest assembly polls scheduled for early next year.

Lapang, who is the President of the Pradesh Congress has declared he will not contest election from Nongpoh assembly constituency. However, he said he will continue to serve the people of the constituency.

Lapang held the office of Chief Minister for the longest time, become MLA in 1972 as an independent candidate.

Lapang said, “I have decided not to contest the elections but I will continue to serve people in Nongpoh constituency and the people of Ri Bhoi as long as blood in my veins continues to circulate.”

While Congress maintained that this will have no bearing on the assembly elections but political observers feel that this move is a blow to Congress for the party is in dire need for candidates who can win their seats for the party recently witnessed an exodus of several important leaders.

Rowell Lyngdoh, Prestone Tynsong, Sniawbhalang Dhar, Ngaitlang Dhar and PN Syiem — will join other parties.

Lapang maintained that he has taken the decision after consulting chief minister, Mukul Sangma.

Lapang is presently in New Delhi. A senior Congress leader who does not want to quoted told ET, “Lapang has strong follower base in Khasi-Jantia hills area and his presence in active politics is necessary for the grand old party which is battling strong anti-incumbency state.”

Regional party including National People's Party (NPP), United Democratic Party (UDP) and Hill State People's Democratic Party (HSPDP) has emerged as a strong contender to Congress in different areas.

BJP too has built up a strong organizational network. The Saffron party is confident that it will put up a good performance in Christianity dominated Meghalaya.

Thousands of booth level party workers will participate in a programme on December 7.

Union Home Minister, Rajnath Singh will address the party workers from across the state in Shillong. Party president Amit Shah will also visit the state shortly.
