Former bureaucrat Devasish Sharma joins Assam BJP ahead of Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election

Guwahati: Devasish Sharma former bureaucrat joined BJP in Assam.

By-election of Nagaon Lok Sabha is scheduled for October 6 and it is widely speculated that Sharma might be fielded from this seat .

On September 3, Nagaon District Commissioner Sharma, IAS, had taken voluntary retirement from government service after the Assam government accepted his request for voluntary retirement.


Sharma sought VRS citing his decision to retire from active government service.

BJP Assam Pradesh President Dilip Saikia asserted that the Bharatiya Janata Party is not merely a political organisation; it is a vast, vibrant and formidable political force that has dedicated itself to the development, progress and transformation of both the nation and the State.

He observed that the decision of individuals who remain deeply connected with society through diverse professional and public spheres to join the BJP family is an immensely positive development that will further strengthen the organisational foundation and social outreach of the Party across Assam.

Saikia stated that Sharma’s wealth of administrative experience, public connect and commitment to service would undoubtedly infuse fresh energy and strength into the Party.

Election to the seat was necessitated as the sitting MP of Congress Pradyut Bordoloi resigned and contested recently held assembly polls from BJP ticket.

Nagaon seat will witness multi cornered fight as All-India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) has fielded Rejaul Karim Sarkar. The Assam unit of the TMC named Dhing College vice-principal Prof Abdul Salam as its candidate.

Assam TMC president and Baghbar MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed said BJP will be its main rival. He said former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee would be a “big force” in the fight against the saffron party.

He said AIUDF has lost support and is dwindling.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had said the BJP would seek to retain its strength in four Assembly segments within the Nagaon parliamentary constituency, while acknowledging that the party was not expecting an easy win.
