Former Assam minister Akon Bora grilled by Anti-Corruption wing

GUWAHATI: The Vigilance and Anti-Corruption wing of the Assam government on Friday grilled former social welfare minister, Akon Bora in connection with alleged Rs 2,000 Crore scam in the social welfare department during the earlier congress government regime.

Bora was grilled for several hours. A senior official in the vigilance and anti-corruption wing said, “We have already interrogated 22 people and since Bora was the minister, he too was grilled. There is allegation of irregular appointments and we have seized several files.”

Bora is likely to be called by the sleuths again. The scam was unearthed in the month of November last year after the BJP led government took over in Assam.

There was allegation that nine lakh fake entries of children were done leading to draining out of an amount of Rs 150 crore per year for last 15 years. There is also allegations of creation of 400 fake Anganwadi centres.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal the government has launched crackdown on corruption as per the wishes of the people. “No one involved in any scam and misuse of public money would be allowed to go scot free.”

Former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi termed this move as nothing but a politically motivated and dared the government to institute similar probe in health and education department.

“This is politically motivated. The government wants to threaten the Congress leaders. Why are they picking up departments selectively, I dare the government to institute probes in health and education departments too”, Gogoi added.
