Former Andhra CM escapes Maoist attack

Former chief minister of Andhra Pradesh Nedurumalli Janardhan Reddy escapes land mine blast in Hyderabad.

HYDERABAD: Former chief minister of Andhra Pradesh and Congress Lok Sabha MP from Visakhapatnam, Nedurumalli Janardhan Reddy escaped a land mine blast, which targeted his convoy of 21 vehicles on Friday morning near Chitwedu village in Nellore district.

Though Mr Reddy was unhurt, three party workers accompanying him died in the blast, while ten others were injured. Perceived as a Maoist attack, it comes just two weeks after two successive blasts in Hyderabad, which killed over 40 people.

Chief minister YS Rajashekara Reddy said he was reviewing the security situation in the entire state, and the government will enhance security and provide forces with advanced equipment. "Funds won’t be a problem," he added.

Seventy-year-old Janardhan Reddy was travelling in a car with his wife and minister for school and adult education, Rajya Lakshmi. This was the second attack on Janardhan Reddy. The first one was in 2003. It was during Janardhan Reddy’s reign that a ban on Maoists was imposed; and he is on their hit list.

The explosion while the couple was on their way to Tirupati. Janardhan Reddy was to receive a doctorate in Tirupati.
