Foreigners staying here can’t be sent back as Bangladesh won’t accept them: BJP’s Assam ally

GUWAHATI: The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) seems to have softened its stance on the Citizenship Amendment Bill, with its president Atul Bora saying it would side with the interest of the people on the issue, while citing the party’s poor performance in the April-May Lok Sabha polls.

AGP had walked out of the BJP-led coalition in January this year after the Lok Sabha passed the bill but returned to the NDA fold to contest the Lok Sabha polls as a BJP ally. BJP won nine of the 14 Lok Sahaba seats from the state but AGP lost all the three it had contested as part of NDA.

“Opposition to CAB was one of the main issues and with this we went to the parliamentary polls. However, people did not vote for us, which shows people have somewhat understood CAB. In a democracy, election is a barometer to understand people’s feeling,” Bora said.


“Being practical, let us accept the fact that the foreigners staying here cannot be sent them back because Bangladesh will not accept them. Even when AGP was in power we could not it,” he added.
