BHUBNESWAR: Worried over virtual revolt by villagers deamnding relief outside camps meant the riot-hit in Kandhamal district, Orissa government on Friday decided to release at least 2000 food assistance cards, official sources said.
The deciscion to provide relief to the people living outside the camps was taken a day after hundreds of people mostly women launched an attack on the relief camp at Tikabali in Kandhamal district and police had to resort to lathicharge in which nearly 18 persons were injured yesterday.
A review meeting chaired by chief secretary Ajit Kumar Tripathy decided that the government would also take care of the people who were unable to earn their livilihood due to imposition of curfew in the area.
Earlier, the agitating people had claimed that they could not go to work for 12 days due to imposition of curfew and thus have to survive without food.
The government has decided to provide two kg rice per adult every day till curfew is in force in Kandhamal, Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) N K Sundaray told media adding more cards could be released on basis of demand.
Besides, the government also decided to send more clothes and other essentials to relief camps as the number of refugees were increasing by the day.
Meanwhile, the chief secretary asked secretaries of Health, Women and Child Development and Rural Devlopment departments to rush senior officials to Kandhamal to monitor different aspects at relief camps.
