CHENNAI: DMK president M Karunanidhi today reiterated the need for imparting education to students through their mother tongue.

"Education through mother tongue is easy and good; it would help expand one's knowledge and imagination; it would improve thinking ability. At least from now, we should encourage our children to study through mother tongue. At the same time, it is not our opinion to push English away," Karunanidhi said in a letter to his partymen, referring to a recent order of the Punjab government.

A section of the media reported that Punjab government has directed the Baba Farid University of Health Sciences to start a project of translating medical books into Punjabi.

Developed countries like China, France, Germany, Japan have not bowed down to English and are imparting education through their mother tongue, he said, adding, "When they continue to study, they are able to understand the subject well and progress well."
