FM assures solution for rural indebtedness in Punjab

Finance Minister P Chidambaram on Thursday assured Punjab that a lasting solution would soon be found to the problem of rural indebtedness in the state.

NEW DELHI: Finance Minister P Chidambaram on Thursday assured Punjab that a lasting solution would soon be found to the problem of rural indebtedness in the state.

The issue was discussed when Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh called on the Finance Minister and urged him to immediately clear the proposed relief package of Rs 2059.95 crore for indebted farmers of the state besides implementing a special development package of Rs 2040 crore.

Chidambaram assured him that a lasting solution to the problem of rural indebtedness would soon be found. He advised the Minister of State for Finance Pawan Bansal to enhance the Central funding from LIC and Rural Infrastructural Development fund from Rs 100 to Rs 200 crore and Rs 400 to Rs 600 crore respectively to strengthen rural infrastructure in the state, a Punjab government release quoting him said.

Singh said the proposed relief package of Rs 2095.95 crore had already been sent to the Centre to enable the farmers overcome hardships owing to rural indebtness.

Divulging the contents of the special development package, already submitted to the Centre, Singh said, "a sum of Rs 760 crore would be spent on rural infrastructure, Rs 630 on urban infrastructure and development, Rs 340 crore on roads, Rs 100 crore on power and Rs 110 crore on education."
