The BBMP had authorized its field staff to collect a fine between Rs 10,000 and Rs 1 lakh for non-compliance with Covid-19 protocols such as ensuring visitors wear masks and keep social distancing.
Sections of business entities had protested saying the fines are very steep and could lead to harassment. Small hoteliers even met BBMP commissioner N Manjunatha Prasad and told him it was a tough job for them to get all customers to wear masks properly or maintain appropriate distance in public places while standing in a group.
The health and family welfare department has fixed a lower fine amount for non-AC stores and convention halls. Air-conditioned party halls, department stores, branded retail stores, shopping malls, star hotels, marriage/convention halls with minimum seating capacity of 500 persons and other similar public places will pay a fine of Rs 10,000. The non-AC party halls and department stores will pay a fine of Rs 5,000.
Those who organize public events, rallies, mobilize people or hold public celebrations, however, will pay a fine of Rs 10,000 for the violation. The government has also made it mandatory for drivers of cars to compulsorily wear masks if windows are open.
