Floods cut off district from highway, 387 villages affected

Dhemaji district in the North Bank of River Brahmaputra continues to remain cut off following flooding of the National Highway 52 at some places.

GUWAHATI: Dhemaji district in the North Bank of River Brahmaputra continues to remain cut off following flooding of the National Highway 52 at some places.

Floodwaters are, however, receding at many places. On Wednesday, the Jiadhal River washed away some portion of the road in Dhemaji district. Telecommunications was also effected.

An official release stated that a police was feared killed in the latest third wave of floods in Dhemaji. Since June, five persons were killed in different waves of floods.

Sources added that over 34,000 people in 387 villages of Dhemaji district were affected in the third wave of floods. Nearly 145 villages in Lakhimpur were flooded. Around one lakh people are affected in Lakhimpur and Dakhuwakhana. Around 15,000 people in Sonitpur district are affected.
