GUWAHATI: Drawing flak for alleged police atrocities on the flood affected people, Assam government has assured to institute two probes one by magistrate and other by a DIG.

Miffed Flood affected people in the Bolbola area in Goalpara district had protested against the poor quality of relief material. People had blocked National highway later police resorted to baton charge to disperse a mob. Several people were injured in the lathi charge.

Problem started when the district administration started distributing clothes and flood victims in some relief camps refused to accept the same on the ground that clothes were of poor quality. They started burning those clothes.

Assam Parliamentary Secretary for Home Etowa Munda visited the Bolbola area and said “ We have ordered a magisterial probe into the incident. We are also going to inquire the allegation of police atrocities by the concerned DIG of the Assam police”.

Sources in police said that police has to do mild lathi charge as the mob was not ready to vacate National highway despite repeated request and negotiations. “Mob refused appeal and instead tried to damage the vehicle on the road forcing the police to resort to lathi charge.”

According to Home ministry 40 persons have died due to recent floods in Assam while the death toll in Meghalaya stood at 55. Another 56 persons have died in Arunachal Pradesh due to floods last month.
