Flood alert in low-lying areas of Meghalaya
SHILLONG: Low lying areas of Meghalaya's West Garo Hills district have been put on alert over apprehensions of flooding by the reverse flow of Brahmaputra and its tributary river.

"There is likelihood of flood by the back flow of the Brahmaputra tributary, the Jinjiram river, in the next 24 hours," West Garo Hills district Deputy Commissioner Pravin Bakshi said.

North Eastern Space Application Centre (NESAC) has sounded flood alerts in low lying areas of Meghalaya's West Garo Hills district after incessant rain in the region for the past two days.

"If there is an embankment breach and water level crosses the danger mark, then nearly 10,000 people will be affected in the district," he said.

"As the Brahmaputra river is swelling, repair work in the affected areas of the embankment is going on," Bakshi said.
