NEW DELHI: Flight operations came to a standstill at the IGI airport this evening following heavy rains that led to waterlogging on the runway and resumed after remaining disrupted for two hours.

About a dozen flights arriving here had to be diverted to other airports, like Jaipur and Lucknow, while about 30 departing flights were delayed by half an hour to three hours, airport sources said.

The flight operations resumed around 6.20 pm after the water on the tarmac and the apron receded, they said.

Delhi's airspace, however, witnessed heavy congestion as the flight operations remained suspended for half an hour between 4.10 pm and 4.40 pm due to heavy rains that lashed the city.

The rains, which had the heaviest intensity for this season, led to fall in visibility to around 100 metres, making the condition unfavourable for flight operations and leading to their suspension.

About a dozen flights arriving here had to be diverted to other airports, like Jaipur, Lucknow, while about 30 departing flights were delayed by half an hour to three hours, the sources said.
