Moscow: Russia has launched an express luxury train, that caters the facilities of a five star hotel to passengers, linking Moscow and St Petersburg.

Commuters, who have to shell out almost eight times more than the fare of a second class ticket for the 800 km route, can enjoy facilities like air conditioning, TV, DVD, multiple electricity sockets and even a shower.

The venture, the first of its kind by the state run Russian Railways Corporation, was launched following the successful operation of similar services by privately owned competitors.

"This type of train marks the beginning of a new level of service, a new era of mass passenger traffic in Russia," an official of the Moscow-St Petersburg Oktyabrskaya Railway said. "This is to make VIP travel more accessible," he added.

The train is meant for VIP travellers and the tickets may cost up to $ 800 for the eight hour journey, the media reported.
