GUWAHATI: Around five persons were injured in eviction drive launched in Amsang wildlife sanctuary in Guwahati on Monday.

Settlers put stiff resistance to the eviction drive launched by 1500 strong police force.

Eviction was carried out in three locations of Amsang—Yusufnagar, Nabajyotinagar and Kangkannagar.

There was stone pelting on police. Around 408 structures in about 150 hectare area were demolished. Amsang is elephant habitat.

Assam Forest minister Pramila Rani Brahma said that eviction in Amsang was carried out following High court direction.

“The settlers were well informed about the eviction. We are only following high court’s order. We have to protect Amsang because of late its surrounding areas have seen sharp increase in human-elephant conflict. Humans, as well as wildlife, will be threatened if we do not protect Amsang.”
