Five illegal catechu factories sealed
Forest officials seized adulterated catechu and raw materials worth over Rs 20 lakh sealed 5 illegal factories and arrested one person in Siliguri.

SILIGURI: Forest officials seized adulterated catechu and raw materials worth over Rs 20 lakh sealed five illegal factories here and arrested one person, divisional forest officer Sailesh Anand said on Saturday.
A leading businessman of the town believed to be heading a big chain of adulterated catechu units in the region is absconding since the raid on Friday, Anand told reporters.
According to forest officials wild catechu logs were brought from Assam and after treating it with chemicals catechu cakes would be made and sold to shops to be used with betel leaf.
Original catechu price is 20 to 25 times higher than the adulterated catechu as original trees are limited in number and protected by the forest department, they said.
