Five detained in Gateway of India harassment case

Police on Thursday detained five youths for allegedly harassing a woman at the historic Gateway of India on New Year eve.


MUMBAI: Police on Thursday detained five youths for allegedly harassing a woman at the historic Gateway of India on New Year eve.

"Five youths were held from Ghatkopar in northeast Mumbai and we will have to check the veracity of their involvement in the incident before arresting them," DCP (Zone I) Brijesh Singh told the media here.

A local tabloid had on Tuesday published pictures of a girl in the crowd being "groped" by a group of over 60 men in the vicinity of the monument and also carried a first person account of the photojournalist who shot the pictures.

According to the photojournalist, the group "tore" the dress of the girl, who was accompanied by a male friend, apart from "touching" her.

On Wednesday police had said that they would be taking suo motu action in the incident as nobody registered a case.
