Attacking Yogi Adityanath's Uttar Pradesh government, Congress general secretary (UP East) Priyanka Gandhi today said that it's the first time in India that a Chief Minister is talking about taking revenge from the people.

"This is the first time in history of India that a Chief Minister (Yogi Adityanath) has said that revenge will be taken from the people," Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said in a press conference in Uttar Pradesh.

Taking a jibe at Aadityanth who had said that those who had damaged public assets would be made to pay, Priyanka said saffron denotes Hinduism and does not reflect violence, 'revenge'.


"There is no place for violence, revenge and resentment in this country's soul. It seems state administration and police are acting on UP Chief Minister's 'revenge' remark," she said.

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra demanded that no academic or legal action should be taken against the peaceful student protesters.

Earlier in the day, a delegation of Congress leaders submitted a 4-page memorandum to Governor Anandiben Patel signed by Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and party state president Ajay Kumar Lallu.

The party has demanded a judicial enquiry into the "unlawful conduct" of the Uttar Pradesh police during protests in the state against the amended Citizenship Act.

The Congress noted that the conduct of the police had been observed and reported to be patently unlawful, destructive of the rule of law and repressive of honest citizens.

The party has also decided to provide legal help to people facing prosecution for participating in the anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) protests.

Priyanka
Gandhi told the lawyers that the party will provide legal help to those who have been arrested in the peaceful protests and the party stands with the victims.

Concluding her four-day visit to Lucknow days after statewide violent clashes over the Citizenship Amendment Act, she told mediapersons that her own security was not a big issue.

"The issue is the safety of the common man in UP," she said in an apparent reference to her alleged manhandling by the state police.
