First tea park in Assam soon
The first tea park of Northeast India is likely to come up in Assam. The state government has moved the union ministry of commerce for setting up the tea park.

GUWAHATI: The first tea park of Northeast India is likely to come up in Assam. The state government has moved the union ministry of commerce for setting up the tea park.
Assam industry minister Pradyut Bordoloi told ET, "We have moved a proposal for setting up a tea park. Suitable land for the purpose is being identified,"
Assam industries & commerce department commissioner and secretary Ravi Capoor said that the park will come up on around 100 acres of land. "The park will have facilities including warehousing, blending and packaging,"
He informed that there are about 14 lakh square feet of warehousing facilities available at present. "The proposed park will be run by the industry," he said.
Recently, the government had a meeting with different stakeholders of the industry for eliciting opinion on the tea park. A source in the state government said, "We are scouting for land near Amingaon Inland Container Depot (ICD) in Guwahati after receiving favourable response from the industry. A detailed project report is being prepared."
Bidyananda Barkakoty, chairman of Northeastern Tea Association has welcomed the government���s move. He informed, "This is the right move by the state government and the industry as whole will be benefited. At present, the warehouses located in tea are scattered and the buyer has to move from one location to another to purchase the tea. It is difficult to reach some warehouses during the rainy season. The tea park will bring all the warehouses together."
Assam produces 480 to 490 million kg of tea, which is 51 percent of the all-India production.

Mr Barkakoty observed that the tea park will have broker houses, IT centre, business centre and other features. If a testing laboratory is added to park, it will help the tea consignment meant for exports. The tea sector of the state will receive a big stimulus with the coming of the park."
