According to the refinery, “Operation and maintenance along with fire safety team carried out visual inspection. While initiating action to shut down the plant there was an explosion which led to fire.”

A minor leakage in the Motor spirit plant led to an explosion in the Numaligarh Refinery in Assam today. One fire man was lost his life in the incident.

According to the refinery, “Operation and maintenance along with fire safety team carried out visual inspection. While initiating action to shut down the plant there was an explosion which led to fire.”

“Motor spirit units were immediately shutdown and the fire was extinguished within 15 minutes. But, one fire man, who was in the proximity of explosion, sustained injury and was taken to hospital where he was declared dead,” the refinery added.


Refinery is assessing the damage in the plant. “We shall file report with more details urgently. Other plants are running normally,” it said.

In 2016-17, the refinery achieved motor spirit sales at 558 TMT (thousand metric tonnes), which was the highest ever for the refinery.
