Filing of counter-affidavit not politically motivated: CBI

The CBI has said it was left with no option but to file a reply in the disproportionate assets case against the BSP supremo as per the Supreme Court order.

NEW DELHI: Rejecting allegations that the affidavit filed against Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati was politically motivated, the CBI today said it was left with no option but to file a reply in the disproportionate assets case against the BSP supremo as per the Supreme Court order.

"Different innuendos and meanings have been attributed to the filing of this counter-affidavit at this junction. It is clarified that it has been filed in compliance with the specific direction given by the apex court," a CBI spokesperson said.

"The affidavit was filed in the context of the writ petition filed by Mayawati on May 5, 2008 challenging the FIR filed by CBI," he said.

The spokesperson said the agency had "no option but to file the counter-affidavit at this juncture in compliance with the specific directions of the Supreme Court".

Denying any role in leaking the affidavit, the spokesperson said "what is mentioned in the counter-affidavit is only the position of the disproportionate assets as existed on September 18, 2003".
