KOLKATA: With West Bengal government yet to acquire 1000 acres land for the proposed Tata Motors small car project, Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) has send a red alert to the state government that this ‘unwanted’ delay may have a dampening effect on the investors’ confidence.
Addressing newspersons on Friday, Mr C K Dhanuka, chairman, FICCI (eastern region) said, “The land acquisition issue has been badly politicised in the state. The government should immediately take steps to acquire lands for industrial purpose. Unnecessary delay will send wrong signals to the investors, who are showing interest in the state after a long period.”
Drawing a comparison with other industrially advanced states like Maharashtra and Gujarat, Mr Dhanuka said, “These states allot land to the investors within a period of three months of signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU). Generally, a serious investor can wait for a maximum of six months for land.”
Incidentally, Tata Motors had signed an MoU with the state government on 18th May for the small car project. But the government has failed to acquire land for the project in the last three months at Singur, Hooghly due to strong resistance from the local farmers and different political parties.
FICCI feels that the West Bengal government should adhere to the commitments to industrialists while simultaneously protecting the interest of the farmers.
The second compensation package says that the farmer will get a piece of land in exchange of his land which will be acquired. The government will provide him land within 25 km from the existing land.
The farmer will not be required to pay any registration charge and stamp duty for the new land. In addition, the farmer will also get a cash which is 0.75 times the market price of his land.
