Farooq as CM nominee in next J-K polls

Farooq Abdullah says he would contest next year's Jammu and Kashmir assembly election as CM candidate.

JAMMU: National Conference patron Farooq Abdullah has said he would contest next year's Jammu and Kashmir assembly election as his party's chief ministerial candidate.

"I will contest the coming assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir. I will be the chief ministerial candidate of the National Conference," Abdullah told reporters on Sunday after inaugurating a photo exhibition here.

He said efforts would be made to strengthen the party to prepare for the elections.

Asked whether his declaration would sideline National Conference president Omar Abdullah, Abdullah said the move would strengthen his son and help make him a better leader.

"As Sukhbir Singh Badal is groomed by his father Punjab Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal, I too am performing the same task for finally handing baton of governance to him (Omar)," he said.

Refuting reports that he was campaigning for the post of Vice-President, Abdullah said "Jammu and Kashmir needed me most and I have no wish to become the Vice President".

He said it was the NDA that offered him the post first and after that Third Front too gave similar proposal. "But I rejected them on the advise of my party."
