Farmers' suicides: Panel gets 3 months

A committee set up by the Maharashtra Government to go into the causes of farmers' suicides in the state has been given three more months to submit its report.

MUMBAI: A committee set up by the Maharashtra Government to go into the causes of farmers' suicides in the state has been given three more months to submit its report.

This was announced by Revenue Minister Narayan Rane during question hour in the Legislative Council today.

Rane said the State government has extended the date of submission of the report of the one-man committee headed by noted economist and Pune University Vice-Chancellor Narendra Jadhav by three months, as the report is yet to be completed.

The committee was set up on November 13, 2007 and given three months to submit its report, Rane said. On February 13, committee was given one more month to complete the work.

Rane also said the recommendations of the committee will be implemented seriously by the government.

The committee was appointed to study causes of suicides by farmers, specially in Vidarbha and suggest measures to tackle the problem, Rane said.

The state government has so far received reports by five different agencies on farmers' suicides but it has not stopped, prompting the government to set up the committee, Rane added.

Shiv Sena leader Diwakar Raote raised the question in the House about the submission of the Jadhav committee report. He said the report was expected to be submitted in the House before the budget session.

The opposition Shiv Sena-BJP members later staged a walkout on the issue of farmers' suicide, demanding complete loan waiver for farmers.
