Days after a farmers’ agitation in south Maharashtra demanding higher sugarcane prices mellowed down, farmers in north Maharashtra are now out in the streets to protest a sudden drop in onion prices.

Worried over the reactions seen in Nashik, Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan announced that he has written a letter to Union Commerce Minister Anand Sharma to abolish, or at least reduce, the minimum export price for onions, which is currently set high at $1,150 a ton to increase local supplies by discouraging exports.
