Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis has directed the RTO to halt action against taxi and auto drivers for not being able to speak Marathi.

Mumbai: Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis has put a halt to the RTO acting against taxi and auto drivers not able to speak Marathi.

On Thursday, Fadnavis, after a meeting with representatives of auto and taxi unions, announced that auto and taxi drivers would be given a year to learn Marathi and there would be no coercive action against them until then.

"Today, representatives of auto and taxi unions met me. They told me that they agreed with the state government's rule to learn Marathi and said that they were learning it. However, since many of those driving these autos and cabs were of different age groups and had left their studies long back, they needed a year to learn the language. It was not possible for them to learn the language in such a short time. So, we have decided to give them a year's time to learn the language. There would be no action against them during this period," said Fadnavis.
