Expressway to have smart cards for toll collection
Motorists using the Mumbai-Pune Expressway will need not stop at toll booths, with IRB maintaining to propose to bring in smart card systems for automated toll collection.
"We are planning to introduce prepaid RFID-based cards which can be stuck on the windshield of vehicles so that they can drive through a dedicated lane at the toll booth without stopping," V D Mhaiskar, Managing director of IRB Limited, said.
The prepaid cards, to be introduced in the next few months, is expected to cost the company about Rs two crore to set up, he said.
"The cards can be purchased at the toll booth itself and is greatly expected to benefit travellers who use the Expressway often," Mhaiskar said.
The Mumbai-Pune Expressway, a 95-km-long six-lane high speed corridor linking the state's two biggest cities, is recently being maintained by private firm IRB, which also collects toll from vehicles.
Vehicles fitted with the cards could travel through the separate toll lane and a special device fitted on the booth would read the card and make the appropriate deduction from the card, Mhaiskar said.
The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) which developed the Expressway is also planning to introduce display boards at the entry points to display messages about the status of the high speed corridor to motorists.
