MUMBAI: A photo exhibition showcasing the historic buildings of New York opended at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (CSMVS) here on Monday.
The American Center, in association with the CSMVS (formerly the Prince of Wales), has organised the exhibition, 'The Landmarks of New York -- An Illustrated Record of the Citys Historic Buildings.'
It was inaugurated by American Center Director Elizabeth Kauffman.
"These landmarks speak directly about the value of historic preservation. While made from stone, brick or steel, buildings breathe with the ideas, the spirit, the beliefs and the public sentiment of their time," Kauffman said.
Thanks to community agreement on the New York City Landmarks Law, we and future generations can continue to enjoy the stories these remarkable edifices tell us about those who came before us, she said.
Speaking on the occasion, CSMVS Chairman B G Deshmukh said this is an opportunity for young architects, town planners and heritage activists to experience the initiative taken by the citizens of the American city for the preservation of their historical landmarks.
The display has 80 black and white framed photographs with descriptive explanatory text about each landmark's cultural, historical, and architectural significance.
