Exam begins at BESU, some students walk out
Several students walked out of the examination centre, as the mid-term tests at BESU with the improvement of situation in the campus, rocked by sporadic clashes between groups of students on March 19-20.
Of the 800 examinees, some came out without writing papers, but the examination went on smoothly, Registrar Biman Bandyopadhyay said.
He said the number of the students, who walked out of the hall, was not yet clear but they were not in the majority.
The situation in the university campus was peaceful as a police force kept vigil nearby.
Trouble started on March 19 night when some students, mostly of third and fourth year, clashed with some second year students who were returning to the hostel from outside. Seven injured students were taken to SSKM hopsital as the stray clashed continued on March 20, prompting the authorities to call police and vacate the hostel on the eve of Holi.
The authorities on Saturday allowed the students to return to the hostel by Sunday evening paving the way for return of normalcy.
The prestigious institution had been in focus for all the wrong reasons during the past one and half years. Sometimes back a student died as he fell down from a third floor balcony while trying to escape chasing mates. Clashes between students' groups led to students' injuries and clampdown by authorities several times in past.
