Ex-Foreign Minister Aso to be Japan's new PM
Japan's conservative Taro Aso is all set to succeed prime minister Yasuo Fukuda amid economic uncertainty faced by the world's second largest economy.
Ruling LDP, which has the majority in the lower house, will chose Aso as Japan's new Prime Minister in parliament on Wednesday. A new Cabinet is expected to be launched the same day, Kyodo news agency reported.
Aso, a former foreign minister, scored a record 351 of the 525 votes cast in the ruling LDP election, defeating his nearest rival Economic and Fiscal Policy Minister Kaoru Yosano by 285 votes. Yosano received only 66 of the total 525 votes.
The other three contestants -- former Defense Minister Yuriko Koike received 46 votes, former LDP policy chief Nobuteru Ishihara 37 and Defense Minister Shigeru Ishiba 25 votes respectively.
Addressing a press conference after becoming LDP president, Aso said he will need three years to restore the economy.
Aso's next major mission is to defeat the main opposition Democratic Party of Japan in the House of Representative elections and eliminate concerns over the nation's flagging economy.
