Guwahati: After almost after 36 years, Assam’s former chief Minister Tarun Gogoi will return to the court when he along with former finance minister P Chidambaram will argue against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in the Supreme Court.

Octogenarian Gogoi is a lawyer by profession. He had last appeared for a case in 1983.

Gogoi travelled to New Delhi on Tuesday. “I will assist Chidambaram while he will argue against the CAA in the apex court. “This act is unconstitutional. When I was the chief minister I had sought asylum for the refugees who had come to India facing persecution in the neighbouring countries,” Gogoi told ET.

He said people of the state have every right to discuss the impact of the Act and nobody should dictate what people will discuss.

Assam finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma asked people to refrain from speaking about things that are not there in the CAA for it will amount to inciting violence. “Though 2014 is the cut-off some are repeatedly saying people will keep on coming. I am telling that this amounts to inciting people and is against public peace. It may disturb the existing peace”.
