Events of 1857 re-enacted at Red Fort
Events of 1857 uprising were today re-enacted at the historic Red Fort here at a function to commemorate 150 years of the first war of independence.

NEW DELHI: Events of 1857 uprising were today re-enacted at the historic Red Fort here at a function to commemorate 150 years of the first war of independence. President A P J Abdul Kalam, Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, NDA Chairman Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee were among those who attended the function held amidst very tight security.
HRD Minster Arjun Singh was also present. The Red Fort complex was teeming with thousands of youth who marched 60km from Meerut to Delhi on foot to participate in the mega cultural event.
Over 2,000 artistes from across the country participated in the cultural programme. The "Jang-e-Azadi 1857" march by the 30,000 youth, which was flagged off from Meerut on May 7, reached the capital yesterday. The youth were dressed in red, blue and green and hailed from various states. Delhi Police and para-military personnel were deployed in and around the venue while elite commandos maintained a strict vigil following intelligence inputs of terror attacks by Lashkar-e-Toiba.
