European Union distances itself from MEP’s Anti-CAA drafts

New Delhi: The European Union has distanced itself from the anti-CAA moves of the Members of the European Parliament (MEP), emphasising that India is a key partner for addressing global challenges.

“As per its regular procedures, the European Parliament published the draft resolutions. It is important to recall that these texts are only drafts tabled by various political groups in the European Parliament. The EU will host its 15th summit with India on March 13 in Brussels, with a view to strengthen its strategic partnership with India,” EU diplomatic sources told ET.

India is a key partner for EU for addressing global challenges and promoting rules-based multilateral order, one of the sources said. “Let me also remind you that the opinions expressed by the European Parliament and its members do not represent the official position of the European Union,” the source said.


The distancing of the EU Council and France from the European Parliament, sources said, came at a time when India has diplomatically engaged Brussels and European parliamentarians. Luxembourg foreign minister on Monday told ET that EU institutions have separation of powers. Indian Ambassador to Belgium, Gaitri Issar Kumar, who is also in charge of India’s ties with EU, has reached out to European lawmakers ahead of debate and voting on the resolutions.

Officials in New Delhi said CAA is a matter “entirely internal” to India. “We hope the sponsors and supporters of the draft will engage with us to get a full and accurate assessment of the facts.”
