EU summons Myanmar diplomat over possible new sanctions
A high level European diplomat summoned Myanmar's charge d'affairs in Brussels to explain the possible tightening of sanctions against his strife-torn country.
A deputy of EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana, Helga Shmidt, received Han Thu on Friday to warn that the 27-nation bloc was preparing to reinforce sanctions against the military regime, Solana's spokeswoman Cristina Gallach said.
Shmidt also warned the diplomat that the EU was in close contact with Myanmar's fellow ASEAN nations and its main allies, China and India, and also planned to step up direct aid to the population, Gallach said.
The EU's aim was to "explain" to Myanmar's leadership the announcement of tougher sanctions this week in New York, where Europe's top diplomats were gathered for a United Nations General Assembly.
European diplomats in Brussels have also met with representatives of all the other members of the Association of Southeast Nations (ASEAN) -- Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam -- to encourage them to put pressure on Myanmar.
The EU announced overnight Tuesday that it would "reinforce and strengthen the existing sanctions" should the Myanmar authorities crack down on the "unarmed and peaceful demonstrators."
The security forces subsequently clamped down on protesters and at least 13 people have been killed.
The bloc, which already has broad sanctions in place on Myanmar's leadership, has since been preparing new measures while also stressing the importance of pressure on neighboring countries and in particular China and India.
