Pakistan has also been asked to step up its fight against terror funding, an issue that will once again figure at the Financial Action Taken Force’s plenary meet in Paris next month.

NEW DELHI: The Europe Union (EU) has called on Pakistan to do more to stop terror activities from its soil.

“The EU has asked Pakistan to act by all means to stop terror groups operating from its territory,” EU deputy secretary general for common security and defence policy (CSDP) Pedro Serrano told ET on the sidelines of the just-concluded third edition of the ‘Raisina Dialogue’, a multilateral global affairs conference held in the Indian capital every year.

Pakistan has also been asked to step up its fight against terror funding, an issue that will once again figure at the Financial Action Taken Force’s plenary meet in Paris next month.

Serrano said countering terrorism is a key area of security cooperation besides nuclear non-proliferation, cyber and maritime security. The EU official’s India trip was also to take forward and implement decisions taken at last year’s Indo-EU Summit including listing of terror groups.

Pointing out that threat has not disappeared from the Islamic state despite the setback to extremist groups in Syria, Serrano said, “India and the EU are working through a deradicalisation programme to combat this propaganda being spread through cyberspace.”

Serrano, without divulging details, also informed that Indo-EU maritime cooperation is expanding to include coordination in the western part of the Indian Ocean Region.

When asked about the EU’s position on the future of the nuclear deal with Iran, Serrano described it as success of multilateralism. “The deal was reached after intense negotiations that lasted for almost a decade. The IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) has continued with its inspections. The deal ensures global peace and stability, and therein lies its significance,” Serrano said.
