BENGALURU: With steep traffic volumes, the Sony World junction in Koramangala has become a nightmare for commuters. The junction is a thoroughfare connecting Koramangala with Indiranagar and Sarjapura Road

Cut traffic signal cycle first, flyover can be final solution

SOLUTIONS

The cycle time of traffic signals from 7 am to 11 am is above 200 seconds, which is over three minutes. This results in queuing up of vehicles. It should come down to 150 seconds.There are four signals within 200500 metres of the junction: the NGV signal, the Maharaja junction signal, the Canara Bank signal and BDA complex signal. These signals should be synchronised.The right turn from Koramangala 100ft road towards is causing traffic jams. We should avoid turns at this junction. As a long-term solution, subject to a proper simulation study, a flyover can be constructed costing about `150-200 crore. It can be done in 9-12 months.

Bring in Lane Discipline and Move Away Bus, Auto Stands

SOLUTIONS

The biggest problem is lack of lane discipline. As a test case, the traffic police should deploy 3-4 personnel here for 21 days and strictly enforce lane discipline. This can address 20-30% of the problem.On the main road from Domlur to NGV, right at the signal, is a bus stop. Then there is an auto rickshaw stand and hawkers. All three should be moved ahead, which is a half-a-day's job.There is little room for structural changes here. By the time an underpass is ready, vehicle population would have gone up.
